Tips for Increasing Productivity

Time is money and effective time management can also mean that you have more time available to enjoy your money - relax, go to dinner, have a holiday or experience a variety of other enjoyable experiences. In order to manage time most effectively to improve the value of your work and your time available to enjoy that money you should work on increasing productivity. In this article we look at a number of tips for increasing productivity.

Increasing Productivity means Maintaining Focus

The first tip for increasing productivity is to stay focused. A large amount of time is wasted through a lack of focus. By focusing on your tasks at hand you are able to get more done in a shorter space of time and manage your time most effectively.

Increasing Productivity means Minimizing Distractions

Increasing productivity means minimizing distractions. Effective time management and increasing productivity means minimizing and controlling distractions. This can be done in a number of ways - the first thing is to minimize and control distractions caused by telephone calls, either have a secretary, family member or friend take messages for you while you concentrate on your task at hand, or use an answering service to take calls. Once you are ready you can set aside a specific time to answer calls and so use your time more effectively and increase productivity.

Increasing productivity by means of controlling distractions should also be done with your thought life. Many times unrelated thoughts may enter your mind - things you need to do that are not related to the task at hand, when these thoughts enter your mind immediately jot them down on a piece of paper or in your computerized to-do list. Once these have been noted you can keep your focus on the task at hand and so increase productivity.

Not All Technology and Tools Help in Increasing Productivity

Many people get conned into believing that every new piece of software or technological gadget will be helpful in increasing productivity. This is not the case, in fact, some technological gadgets and software can actually hamper your productivity. Let's take for example email software. Email software is very useful and can greatly increase productivity, however instant alerts and notifications in your email software may actually hamper your productivity. By always receiving alerts whenever a new email arrives you are constantly interrupted from your task at hand and become very distracted instead of focused. Turn off all instant alerts and notifications and instead set aside time each day when you will deal with your emails. Any technology which increases interruptions or distracts focus is probably not beneficial to your productivity.

Prioritizing Tasks is Useful in Increasing Productivity

Prioritizing tasks is important for effective time management and useful for increasing productivity. By prioritizing tasks you are able to focus on those tasks that are most important. By focusing on these tasks you will improve your productivity.

Making Use of Time Gaps Helps in Increasing Productivity

Many small gaps of time are wasted that could be more effectively used and help in increasing productivity. Think about times when you are using public transport, waiting in queues, or waiting for someone to arrive - all these opportunities are often wasted when they could be spent more productively. If you know that you are going to have time to spare take along some activity which can be performed within a few minutes or which you can make a start on.

There are a number of tips you can use for increasing productivity - these include staying focused, minimizing distractions, prioritizing task lists, utilizing time gaps and being careful of the technology that you use to ensure that it really does increase productivity rather than harm it.
