The Importance of Taking Time off and Balance

Effective time management also requires time for rest and relaxation and leading a balanced life. If you are constantly working you will soon find yourself burning out, suffering from a lack of energy and not functioning at optimal levels. By allowing yourself time to rest and relax you will allow your body to build itself up again for more effective activity.

Get Enough Sleep

Each night you should ensure that you get enough sleep, eight hours is generally considered a good guide but some people cope with less while others need slightly more; the important thing is to know how much sleep you need each night and then to ensure that you get that sleep. If you suffer from a lack of sleep you will find that you don't have energy to effectively complete tasks, you will not be able to concentrate and focus on the work you need to do and will generally not be as productive as you can be after a good night's sleep.

Include a Day off each Week

Effective time management allows one day a week when you will not do any work but will focus on activities that you enjoy and that build up you up for the next cycle of activity. Although you may be able to cope for a while working seven days a week, if you keep this up for a long period you will find yourself becoming very stressed, lacking energy and not having the emotional strength to handle the difficult situations which life may throw at you. When planning your week ensure that you set aside a day to do those things that you enjoy in order to keep your mind healthy.

Effective Time Management allows for Holidays

Effective time management also allows room for holidays. If you have effectively managed your work time then you will not feel guilty about going away every now and again and just stopping working for a while, your work will be able to cope without you. Holidays are also important times to bring balance into your life - spending time with friends and family, relaxing and allowing your body to recuperate for another season of activity. Constant work without taking any holidays can lead to stress-related diseases or burn-out.

Siestas and Small Rest Periods

If you are really feeling tired during the day and are not functioning optimally take some time to have a quick rest. Often a quick rest period or even an afternoon siesta can do wonders for your productivity as you will feel more refreshed when you wake up and ready to tackle tasks that you may have felt too tired to accomplish before the siesta. If you are not able to have a full siesta or rest then just close your eyes and relax for a few minutes, allow your mind to "switch off" and day dream a little. This rest period will help your body make it through the rest of the day.

In conclusion, rest periods are important parts of effective time management. These rest periods may vary from small rest periods through the day to holidays. They allow your body to build itself up for further activity and to help prevent stress-related diseases and burn-out.
