Parkinson's Law and Effective Time Management

Parkinson's Law states that "work expands to fit the time allotted to it" and this really applies to any activity. This law is vital for effective time management and learning how to manage your time correctly.

The Importance of Deadlines

Understanding Parkinson's Law helps us to understand why deadlines are so important to effective time management. If we do not have deadlines then we can expand the amount of time to complete an activity indefinitely and it may never get done. By setting a deadline we limit ourselves to finishing the project within a set amount of time and ensuring that it is completed within that time.

Set an Earlier Deadline

For more effective time management try to set an earlier deadline then you may have been given. If you just keep the original deadline you may have been given externally, Parkinson's Law states that the work will expand to fit this time limit and you will only just get the project done on time, if you set an earlier time limit you can be assured that you will not only finish the project on time but will not need to stress about it because there will still be time available.

Working with a Time Budget

A time budget is another way to improve your time management. A time budget tells you how much time you have allotted to completing a task. By having a daily time budget you limit the amount of time you spend on activities each day and do not allow Parkinson's Law to negatively impact your effective time management.

Parkinson's Law and Effective Time Management allow you to get more done in Less Time

Parkinson's Law states that work expands to fit the time allocated to it, in some respects the inverse of this can be used for more effective time management. If you would normally allocate a large amount of time to get something done then try allocating a smaller amount of time and you should be able to get more done in less time. This obviously has a limit but if you set realistically smaller time limits then you should be able to accomplish more and manage your time more effectively.

Parkinson's Law and More Effective Time Management

In order to improve your skills at effective time management use the Parkinson's Law as your base and start by gradually decreasing the amount of time you allocate to a task. When you need to do that task again reduce the amount of time again until you find the optimal amount of time to do the task in. By gradually reducing the amount of time you spend on a task you will see when it is no longer possible to reduce the amount of time and then you have found the optimum amount of time to spend on the task for more effective time management.

In conclusion, Parkinson's Law which states that work or activity expands to fit the amount of time allocated to it is an important tool for effective time management. By setting yourself deadlines, creating a time budget and gradually reducing the amount of time you spend on activities you are able to improve your effective time management skills and get more done.
