Personal development, or the desire to improve oneself, is a value held by many people; but how do you go about personal development? The first thing you should consider when you look at personal development is your personal development plan which includes goal setting on issues where you want to improve. In this article we consider how you can set goals which will help you in your quest for personal development.
Before Goal Setting Decide Which Areas you want in your Personal Development Plan
Before goal setting decide which areas you want in your personal development plan. Take a look at those areas in which you want to see growth or improvement in your life and write these down. Do you want to see personal development in terms of studying? Do you want to see career development? Do you want to be healthier? Write down all the areas where you want to see personal development.
Setting Goals for Personal Development
Once you have written down a number of areas where you would like to see personal development in it is time to set goals for these areas. Goal setting means setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, rewarding and timely. You should be as specific as possible about what you want to attain, when you want to attain it by and ensure that there is something you can measure it by.
Creating your Personal Development Plan Using Goal Setting
Once you have set long term goals you can create a personal development plan that you can begin working on immediately. Goal setting creates long term and short term specific goals that you can work towards within a specific timeframe; your personal development plan includes specific tasks which you need to achieve in order to reach your personal development goals. Take each of the goals you have set and look at what steps you can start taking today to help you reach your personal development ideals. Your personal development plan should include a number of different steps towards each goal – for example an action you can take today, an action you will take once today’s task is complete and so on.
Your Personal Development To-Do List
After the goal setting process and creating your personal development plan you have a list of steps which you need to take in order to reach your personal development goals. Take the next actions on your personal development plan, those actions which you can do today, and write these down on a separate to-do list. As you complete each of these activities mark them off your list and replace them with the following step to reach your personal development goals.
In conclusion, personal development begins with goal setting and creating a personal development plan. Once you have set goals and created your personal development plan you will be able to see more clearly what steps you need to take today in order to meet these goals and these can be written as a to-do list.
