Time Management – Working with To-Do Lists

One of the most common and effective tools for effective time management is the to-do list. To-do lists may be paper-based, computerized or online. They may also be organized in a number of different ways and in this article we will discuss the various types of to-do lists, how they can be organized and how they may be used for more effective time management.

Types of To-Do Lists Used for Effective Time Management

There are a number of different types of to-do lists which may be used for effective time management including paper-based, computerized or online to-do lists. Paper-based to-do lists are the more traditional form of to-do lists written on pieces of paper. These to-do lists have the benefit of being very portable and can be carried around in a pocket or handbag. Computerized to-do lists are based on to-do list software and allow easy manipulation and can be prioritized without any mess or having to re-write the to-do list. Online to-do lists are similar to computerized to-do lists except that they are held on the website host rather than directly on your computer.

Organizing Your To-Do List for Effective Time Management

If you are using your to-do list for more effective time management then it is important to consider how you organize your to-do list. This really relates to how you prioritize your activities. If you write a simple to-do list with no prioritization then you may work through the list but find that you do not have time to complete important activities at the end of the list. When organizing your to-do list you should use a system for prioritizing activities. This may be done either by putting a letter (A, B, C or D) next to each item depending on its priority – A for important, B for slightly less important, C for activities you want to do but which are not important and D for activities which you have decided not to do; or by writing your to-do list in order of priority.

Working with a To-Do List for More Effective Time Management

A to-do list is useless unless you actually use it for more effective time management. When creating your to-do list start by considering the goals you want to achieve. Write down tasks you can complete today that will help you move one step closer to achieving your ultimate goal. Prioritize these items in one of the ways mentioned above and then work on completing the tasks in order of their importance. An effective to-do list does not have too many activities that it is impossible to complete in one day, but it has enough to keep you motivated and disciplined in achieving your goals. An effective to-do list also contains items which can be carried over to the next day if there is not enough time to complete all the activities in one day.

In conclusion, to-do lists are one of the tools used for effective time management. You may choose to work with a paper-based, computerized or online to-do list according to what suits you best, but your to-do list should have some method of pointing out what your priorities are in the tasks you want to complete. When making a to-do list you should start with looking at the goals you want to achieve and setting tasks in line with these goals. These tasks should then be prioritized and worked through in order. Tasks on a to-do list may be carried over to the next day if there is not enough time to complete all tasks on a given day. Start today by creating a to-do list that will help you to more effectively manage your time.
