JetTask 2.1.1

A new version of JetTask is now available - version 2.1.1.  This version contains minor bug fixes and two significant changes.  First, JetTask now uses significantly more memory.  Second, the application no longer starts up automatically.  Below is a description of these changes, why they were made, and how the previous behaviour can be restored.

JetTask Memory Usage

Why would a new version use significantly more memory?

When JetTask runs it uses memory to store the information it needs.  The original version of JetTask did not release this memory until the system needed it.  Unfortunately, some customers would look at the memory usage and complain that too much memory was being used.  As a result of the customer complaints, we release a version of JetTask that released memory more often.

But this had a downside.  If you released the memory and later needed it, you would need to process the information again.  This had the effect of slowing the application down.  Something that customers have also complained about.  Because memory is generally very cheap we have decided to go back to releasing memory only when the system needs it.  With this change, you should see JetTask running much faster.

NOTE:  If your system is running low on memory, JetTask will automatically respond by releasing memory more often.

If you would like JetTask to have a smaller memory footprint, you can achieve this by modifying the registry key:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clearcove\JetTask\lightMemoryMode

Simply set this key to 'true' to enable a smaller footprint, or 'false' to disable.  After modifying this key, you will need to restart JetTask for the changes to take effect.

JetTask Startup

JetTask has had problems running on startup if you try to access the program too soon (before your computer has finished booting up).  This was due to the fact that JetTask needs access to services provided by the operating system.  There is no way to determine if these services are available before the OS has finished booting up.  Because of this, we have removed JetTask from the startup menu.  JetTask will no longer start automatically.

If you would like to change this, follow these instructions:

  1. 1.  Go to Start -> Programs -> JetTask.  Right-click on the JetTask shortcut.  Select Copy.
  2. 2.  Go to Start -> Programs -> Startup.  Right-click and select explore.
  3. 3.  Once explorer has started, right-click on the file side of the menu and select Paste.
  4. 4.  Right-click on the new JetTask shortcut and select properties.
  5. 5.  In the Target field, add the text: "-silent" outside of the quotes.  Your target shoudl look like:  "C:\Program Files\JetTask\JetTask.exe" -silent
  6. 6.  You can test the new short cut by going to Start -> Programs -> Startup -> JetTask.  JetTask should start but without the splash screen.

That's it!  Hope you enjoy the new version!  As always, let us know if you have any questions or comments.
