Facebook and Productivity

I must admit that recently I have become a bit of a Facebook addict, along with many others it seems. My reasons are certainly not linked to productivity and when you look at the controversial opinions regarding Facebook and productivity I can definitely see both sides of the story.

Facebook does allow you to keep contact with virtually everyone you know or have ever known and it does allow you to share your calendar, etc. with your friends and colleagues as well as having an application that allows you to upload your files for your friends and colleagues to view and from this point of view I do believe that Facebook can be very handy in terms of productivity.

The use of Facebook however does need to be controlled if you want to improve your productivity. It is very easy to get caught up in emailing friends, adding social notes to your profile or just searching for new applications and groups. None of these activities really benefit our productivity.

If you look up productivity and Facebook on Google you will notice how conflicting the ideas are in this area - some people are ready to put their whole business on Facebook, while others think that Facebook virtually kills productivity. The reality I think is somewhere between these two extremes. If you are disciplined and limit the time and activities that you take part in one Facebook then you can use Facebook to improve your productivity. If you're not disciplined then Facebook can quickly eat up time that you should be spending on more productive activities.

Facebook is becoming very popular worldwide for keeping in contact with people and it does have a few benefits for productivity such as the ability to share schedules, calendars and files online but do watch that it doesn't just become another time waster stealing your time you should be spending on more productive activities.
