I recently came across a blog post that I found very interesting – did you know that you can use a Wiki to organize a number of different aspects of your life? I have always known a Wiki as a place to share and get information on a wide variety of topics but never really thought of it as an organizing or productivity tool.
Here are some of the ideas that they suggested for using a wiki to improve your productivity and general organization:
- 1. To-do list – well, they say that creating a list on a Wiki is easy and the most productive list is a to-do list, which may be true, but personally I would prefer to keep my to-do list on my computer with to-do list software than to use a Wiki for it.
- 2. Plan an event – now here is one area where they could definitely be right. What they suggest is that by planning an event on a Wiki all the different people involved are able to access the information relevant to their area and you can also set it out in such a way that related activities are grouped together. This can certainly prove useful in terms of productivity when planning any event from weddings and other personal parties through to business events.
- 3. Logging client work – particularly useful for freelance workers, as it allows you to either put all your work on one page to keep track of projects done or hours worked; or to have a separate page for each client which could also be available to the client.
- 4. Goals – here they suggest that instead of writing down goals and forgetting about them you may want to put them on a Wiki. Once again, this is better than forgetting about them but personally I would prefer to use my to-do list software to create goals and keep everything on my computer.
- 5. Workspace – Here is another useful idea from their post. Using a Wiki as a workspace means that you can access your work from any computer which certainly would prove useful in terms of productivity.
So it appears that apart from looking up information on Wiki’s and sharing your ideas on them that a Wiki may also have other uses. The best ways I think to use a Wiki to boost your productivity is to use it when planning events, logging client work or use it as a workspace if you tend to work on different computers at different times. I am not so convinced about the to-do list and goals idea but if you would like to try this then compare it to other to-do list software and goal setting software available to see which works best for you.
